UMI and Utrecht University Conduct Joint Research, Implementing Collaboration of the Two Institutions

Makassar.umi.ac.id. Universitas Muslim Indonesia (UMI) continues to mark its international activities in its pursuit of becoming a World Class University. On October 10, 2023, Delegation from UMI was received by Dr. Pauline Phoa, LLM, from Utrecht University at the Utrecht University campus in the Netherlands.
The purpose of the UMI delegation’s visit to Utrecht University was to discuss research collaboration with the Faculty of Law of UMI on the topic of Legal Constructs of Social Media Use. This was conveyed by the Dean of the Faculty of Law of UMI, Prof. Dr. H. La Ode Husen, during the event. He further stated that the joint research proposal had been submitted and under discussion since June 2023 and is currently in the review process. Therefore, the UMI delegation’s visit to Utrecht aimed to strengthen discussions, particularly in elaborating and finalizing related policies, he added.
Additionally, Vice Rector V of UMI, Prof. Dr. Ir. H. M. Hattah Fattah, MS, added that during the visit to Utrecht University, a meeting was also held with UCWOSL, one of the study centers focusing on Water, Maritime, and Sustainability Law, to explore collaboration with UMI in Research and Development of Maritime Law based on the Ammana Gappa Concept.
This meeting also followed up on the UMI delegation’s previous visit to the National University of Singapore (NUS), which discussed agreements related to Maritime Law research based on the Ammana Gappa concept. UMI offered Utrecht University the opportunity for a tripartite collaboration between Universitas Muslim Indonesia, National University of Singapore, and Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Prof. Hatta added that UMI had coordinated with NUS, and through Dr. Effendy from the Southeast Asia Studies Department at NUS, they welcomed the plan and would initiate internal discussions at NUS.


“In this meeting with UCWOSL, we also proposed the concept of a tripartite joint research between Universitas Muslim Indonesia, National University of Singapore, and Utrecht University in Surabaya, organized by NUS in 2024 and coordinated by Dr. Donna. Alhamdulillah, NUS responded positively to the proposal for joint tripartite research involving the three largest campuses from three countries,” said Prof. Hatta.
Chair of LLM at Utrecht University, Dr. Pauline, welcomed and appreciated the research collaboration concept between the Faculty of Law of UMI and Utrecht University. She also expressed appreciation for UMI’s concept of joint tripartite research involving three institutions from three countries. Dr. Pauline also invited UMI to promptly prepare the Terms of Reference (ToR) and requested Prof. Hatta to coordinate with NUS.


Present at the meeting with Utrecht University were Dean of the Faculty of Law of UMI, Prof. Dr. H. La Ode Husen, SH., Mh., along with Vice Rector for Cooperation and Promotion, Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Muhammad Hattah, MS, and representatives from the Waqaf foundation (YW UMI), including Head of Program Division at YW UMI, Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Lambang Basri, PhD, and Head of Asset Division of YW UMI, Dr. Ir. Annas Boceng, MS. The delegation also included Vice Deans of the Faculty of Law of UMI, Dr. Rinaldy Jobhar Bima, SH., MH, (Vice dean I) and Dr. Baharuddin Badaru, SH., MH (Vice Dean III), as well as several faculty members who participated in the visit to Utrecht University.
